Artist Writing
Articulating Your Creative Work
A two-session workshop for artists with Abigail Levine
August 25 & September 1 || 7-9pm EST
On Zoom
presented in collaboration with EMERGENYC
This workshop is designed to give you tools and techniques for developing language around your creative work that feels both authentic and strategic, building comfort and confidence in writing more generally.
During the session, you’ll have time to write, review examples of artist statements, and get feedback from the other artist-participants.
You’ll leave the workshop with writing about yourself as an artist and your current projects, as well as some practices for continuing to build this part of your work and career.
In addition, I will provide individual written feedback on a draft of your artist statement or project description.
We’ll work from techniques you use already in your creative work—embodied exercises and formal constraints—that get you out of your head and connect to language through your body.

Abigail
I have worked as an artist in large art institutions, universities, community organizations, and artist-activist run projects. I have done this work in New York, Los Angeles, Cuba, Mexico, Venezuela, and Brazil. (I speak Spanish fluently and read comfortably in Portuguese.) I draw on all of these references to help you begin to shape your writing towards the contexts in which you want to work. You can take a look at my artistic work and the way I work with artists on their writing here.
From former students
“Each two hour workshop was structured around exercises to stimulate the integration of the physical and mental creative body that worked beautifully in an online setting. Abigail is purposeful and direct while at the same time, playful, thoughtful and inclusive. Additionally, she gave us individual attention and feedback that I found extremely helpful. By the end of the three sessions, I had my solid draft of an artist statement. It's on my website now. I highly recommend her class and look forward to working with her in the future.”
—Kelly Marie Martin, LA-based artist, musician & community builder
"Through the workshop, Abigail showed us how we can ground our process of writing into our physical motions and sensations. As a classical pianist, I work hard to counteract the culture that divides the mental and physical aspect of musical experience. Now I know how to embody my practice as a writer as well! Thank you, Abby!"
—Makiko Hirata, DMA; musician and scholar
Thank you! I did not know how to move forward with my artist statement. Your generous feedback and suggestions have given me the direction that I needed.
—Elvira Clayton, interdisciplinary artist
The class was great - I really loved the movement involved and there were so many helpful perspectives and tips and resources you shared, along with the feedback. Many thanks!
